Elevating the product: UX motion

We introduced a culture of UX motion, overcoming hurdles
on software and development, resulting thoughtful, lovable interactions across our product and upskilled designers.
problem
Our product was static and uninspiring, lacking delight. Demand for food delivery was increasing due to the pandemic, and our product felt dated compared to the competition.
root cause
UX maturity was low at this stage in the company, and engineering had never considered how to support motion in our product.
solution
We introduced motion strategically – as feedback to common interactions at a component level, to celebrate success for reaching a deal or leaving a review, in empty states to add delight, and more.
impact
We built a culture around UX motion, with many intentional motion additions to our product, a dedicated hire,
a clear path to develop motion without adding latency, procured software (ProtoPie) which enabled designers to explore, and an upskilled team of product designers, confident to build motion interactions into to their solutions.
my role
Within 6 months of joining Delivery Hero, I collected a group of designers who expressed interest in UX Motion, and
started a UX Motion guild. We defined how UX Motion interactions should fit into our product, and led squad workshops
to educate everyone about UX Motion and uncover opportunities to add it to our product. I built a case for a dedicated UX motion hire, as well as a case for our motion software procurement. Within a year, we started to mature our product through UX motion interaction, and today we have several examples of intentional UX motion across our product.
